UKTI Defence & Security
Organisation (UKTI DSO), working
closely with the Ministry of
Defence (MOD), helps the UK
defence and security sectors
succeed internationally. UKTI DSO
achieves this by providing overseas
customers of UK defence and
security companies with access to
the MOD, armed forces and wider
government specialist support.
UKTI DSO, in conjunction with
MOD and business, also seeks to
identify export opportunities for UK
programmes at an early stage in the
acquisition cycle.
Richard Paniguian, CBE, Managing
Director, UKTI Defence & Security
Organisation (UKTI DSO)
“UKTI DSO helps the UK defence
and security sectors succeed
internationally. With the continued
support of the MOD, UKTI DSO
delivers the essential government to-
government dimension to
company-led marketing campaigns
in pursuit of maintaining the
UK’s strong position in the global
defence export market.”
UKTI DSO Key Account
Management (KAM)
Provides us
with the opportunity to develop
our understanding of the campaign
imperatives for the major companies
within the UK defence and
security sectors. In turn, it allows
us to focus available UKTI DSO
resources to provide the best level
of co-ordinated support to future
campaigns and long-term projects
through market positioning of
emerging systems and engagement
with the Ministry of Defence and
other Government Departments.
This engagement will enable UKTI
DSO to clearly advise and inform
industry’s strategic long-term export
priorities and planning processes.
We have currently initiated formal
KAM relationships with a number
of major defence and security
sector companies.
UKTI DSO Small Business
Unit (SBU)
Facilitates the DSO
advice, information and support
required by SMEs to maximise
their overseas defence and
security sales prospects. SMEs
joining the DSO Charter scheme
receive a personal and bespoke
service provided by the SBU. This
includes introductions to DSO and
other UKTI and MOD colleagues
with the capability to take their
business forward, regional
marketing briefings, meet-the buyer
opportunities, a periodic
newsletter and access to a Charter exclusive
website.
Our Services
Support to the Defence and Security Sector Defence business
is characterised by government
customers running prolonged competitions that require
sustained support to UK exporters,
often through government-to-government
channels. UKTI DSO
provides this essential government to-
government support to industry-led
campaigns. To help UK defence
and security exporters succeed
in overseas markets, UKTI DSO
delivers various services, including a
dedicated team supplying facilities
for HM Government to assist
companies at defence and security
events and exhibitions, both in
the UK and overseas, including the following:
- Defence Systems and Equipment
International This is the world’s
largest fully integrated defence
and security exhibition.
- UKTI DSO Symposium The 2009
UKTI DSO Symposium will be an
excellent opportunity to promote
new business opportunities in
defence and security export
markets, discuss how these can
be sustained in a global recession,
and what support UKTI DSO can
offer business.
- British Army Export Support
Team (EST) The UKTI DSO EST
based at Bovington and Larkhill
is made up of serving military
personnel with a wide range of
skills and experience. They provide
specialist military support and
advice to UK companies and to
potential customers. They bring a
unique operational capability to
their demonstrations of in-service
equipment, but can also work in
support of companies marketing
other UK products with an export
potential. The EST is also available
to assist companies with after-sales
support and refresher training,
both in the UK and overseas.
Staffing
The UKTI DSO is an integral part
of UKTI. The majority of the
civil servants in the organisation
transferred from the Ministry of
Defence alongside a cohort of
serving military staff as well as a
number of MOD civil servants on
loan to BERR, all of whom have a
real understanding of the defence
and security industries. We are
actively working to continue the
successful assimilation of DSO staff,
both civilian and military, into UKTI.
